Why do you play World of Warcraft?

Why do you play World of Warcraft? Is it a longing to be part of a different world unlike our own? Is it the setting and the characters in game that you love interacting with? is it the sprawling vistas or  the other-worldly magic that draws you in?

For me, playing World of Warcraft, or any game for that matter, is part escape and part desire to be someone I am not. Obviously, I am not a female Night Elf Druid, but part of me has fun playing as one. I'm sure there are some that would ask why I chose to play as a female character (and that's perhaps an idea for a future post) but that's what is great (at least for me) about Warcraft or video games in general - the ability to do things you just can't do in real life.

I've met some great people while playing the game - some of which I speak to outside of the game. This is another great benefit to these persistent online worlds. The social aspect for those that don't have the time (or simply have forgotten how to) meet new friends in the real world. By default you have a common interest without even having to break the ice. Often times you need to work together  to accomplish a task and in the process build trust and friendship.

I've always been curious about people that play this game and what path brought them to it and what their experiences have been like. So why not share yours in the comments below? Let me know why you play World of Warcraft.
